Write and Unite DVD
A Magic Moments production
Interview with the editor

- How much time did you spend on Write & Unite DVD project?

We spent a LONG time making "Write and Unite". To begin with, the footage was shot over a few years time. Once all the footage was collected, one of our team members edited, animated, composited, authored, and packaged the final product you see today. It's a lot of work for one guy, so it took another year or so to get it all finished. We obviously are not in the video business for the money.

- Which were the biggest problems you met in doing the movie?

I'd say that the biggest problems were just related to the time it took to create the DVD. It's hard to stay focused on a project for that long. Also, our team members are spread around the globe, so communicating and collaborating was, and continues to be tricky. We continue to face challenges with distribution and getting the video out to people. If anyone out there knows anyone who wants to carry the DVD, please contact us.

- How did you choose the writers for the interviews and sections?

A few members of the team were responsible for shooting the footage. Each member chose places and people to include in the video. Some of these choices simply came down to who we know, and what cities we traveled to in the past few years. When it came down to editing time, we tried to pick the widest variety of footage, and best quality graff, in order to make a dope video.

- Do you think that graffiti is a thing that should be as secret as possible (so, no journalistic articles, no interview to writers from general media, etc.) or that it has to go out in order to be understood and (maybe) accepted? Basically, I'm talking about illegal graffiti, not legal walls...

This is a fine line we need to walk. Since much of the footage we include in our videos has some sort of "rule bending", we always blur faces. If there is too much information spreading around, it can make things harder for writers. We chose not to include a narration track on "Write and Unite" because we felt that explaining too much could be a bad thing.

- USA is the place where everything began: do you think that USA graffiti are still playing a stylistic leader role right now?

Things have definitely shifted around. Nowadays you see fresh styles all over the world. That's one of the reasons we try to include lots of different cities in our videos. Picking a leader is too difficult.

- Do you think that the passing on knowledge in graffiti is a good thing for its development?

Most definitely. Knowing about past writers, and graff-related knowledge is key. By making these videos, we hope to document what's going on in parts of the graff scene at the time it was made. People can look back on these videos as documentation of what was being done, long after the walls have been buffed or even knocked down.

- Any future project from the Magic Moments Team?

Yes indeed. Even though we are still trying to find new places to distribute the "Write and Unite" DVD, we are also working on the next release. This will most likely be a similar DVD to the "Write and Unite" video. Footage from around the world, with fresh writers, and lots of nice pieces.
