Interview with the author Bjorn Almqvist
- The "Writer United" book is not just
a monography of one of the most active crew in Europe:
what was the idea behind this project?
An initial reason behind the project was the photographer,
Emil Hagelins, interest in the underground tunnels. The
idea was to describe how a graffiti crew works in general,
how the pieces are created, and specificly how WUFC works.
Since WUFC is one of the most active crews in Europe we
thought that they would be a good example for describing
graffiticrews in general. The many different interesting
characters in the crew was also a reason for choosing
WUFC. We wanted to show as much as possible both in words
and photos to make the portrait as personal as possible,
and let the reader know how the writers thinks and lives
as well as getting a feeling of the often secret environments
they work in.
- The WUFC crew is seriously devoted to the most
discussed part of writing, the train bombing. Do you think
that is a reason of their "success"?
I think that writing on trains is what is regarded as
the most prestigeous form of writing within the European
graffiti community. And for this reason train writers
probably get more recognition in most magazines and so
on. Only a few members of WUFC writes on trains, but train
writing is what the crew is most famous for. I think that
Writers United have a broader perspective of the crew
shows more than the trains that most people connect with
them.
- The represented writers are often seen in abroad countries
as a "Sweden trademark". What is the general
idea in their country?
It´s hard to say what a typical Swedish style is.
But if you mean a style that is clean and simple i guess
most of the people in WUFC have a typical Swedish style.
- This new book comes after a long experience
of Dokument Forlag (They call us vandals and Overground)
and UP. I've heard that the new Overground chapter is
coming soon. Could you tell us something about new projects?
Yes, we are working with a sequal to Overground. It will
probably be the next book we´ll release. If everything
goes as planned it will be out by christmas 2005. It will
have the same style and theme as Overground. Some of the
writers presented are: Adams, Sabe, Nug, Caster and Skil.
Apart from that we also have a few other books we are
working on, but we´ll tell you more about them later
on. |
